Māori view the harakeke bush as whānau
(family). The leaves grow in families of fans. The rito (‘baby’ leaf) grows at the
centre of each fan. The āwhi rito (‘parent’ leaves) grow on either side of the
baby to protect them. These groups of three leaves are never cut. Only the leaves
on the outside of these (3rd or 4th from the centre)
called the tupuna (‘grandparent’ leaves) are cut.
