Kiwi Sport

Room 7 love doing Kiwi Sport with Anton. Thanks Anton for taking us for some really fun games. Here are some photos of Room 7 showing great sportsmanship and enjoying Kiwi Sport.

Rākau

Hei aha ngā rākau? - What are rākau?
There are many different variations of using rākau. Traditionally, tī rākau (stick games) were played with both men and women. Participants generally formed two rows opposite one another and threw and caught rākau in time to a chant.

Here is Room 7 using rākau. We had a lot of fun learning a traditional Māori stick game.

Harakeke - Flax

We are learning about our precious flax resource...

Māori view the harakeke bush as whānau (family). The leaves grow in families of fans. The rito (‘baby’ leaf) grows at the centre of each fan. The āwhi rito (‘parent’ leaves) grow on either side of the baby to protect them. These groups of three leaves are never cut. Only the leaves on the outside of these (3rd or 4th from the centre) called the tupuna (‘grandparent’ leaves) are cut.

Here is some of our work...
